Public speaking fear can be a huge obstacle if you want to progress your career. Here are a few public speaking tips and a suggestion if you are looking for a public speaking book. Nervousness Is Normal. Practice and Prepare! All people feel some physiological reactions like pounding hearts and trembling hands. Do not associate these feelings with the sense that you will perform poorly or make a fool of yourself. Some nerves are good. The adrenaline rush that makes you sweat also makes you more alert and ready to give your best performance. The best way to overcome anxiety is to prepare, prepare, and prepare some more. Know the environment. Know the venue where you will be speaking. Get there well ahead of time. Walk the room. Walk the stage. Get a feel for the vibe of the environment so you are more comfortable when its “go time.” Test all equipment. Nothing sucks more that last-minute technical difficulties. Avoid adding even more stress by testing any and all equipment and audio visual functions ahead of time. And have backups. Slow down. We have some great sayings in the SEAL teams: “slow is smooth, and smooth is fast, ” and “don’t run to your death.” Nothing shows nerves more than racing through your presentation. Transformative teaching tips… Let’s talk about humans’ favorite transformation mascot: the butterfly. Caterpillars are moving on instinct when they build their cocoons and settle in for a spell. They don’t get a pamphlet that tells them what to do and why, and no one makes any promises to them about what happens next. They don’t go into the transformation knowing they’ll turn into beautiful butterflies or that, on the way there, they’ll pretty much melt into jelly as part of the metamorphosis process. They just take one step at a time and trust their instincts.

Detachment while witnessing and acknowledging the beauty and richness of all human dilemmas is key to practicing compassion. When you attach yourself to another’s circumstances or emotional experiencing, you begin to swim in their soup. This is valuable if you are practicing empathy. But in this practice of coaching you need to remain detached and neutral in order to speak and listen with discriminating aptitude and capability. Much like an athletic coach, who stays on the side lines, our job is to stay out of the client’s soup. It’s a tricky place to play in, this fierce compassion. It’s a balance of being strong and being soft. As a friend of mine described it, it’s being an iron fist in a silk glove. Think of people who work in emergency situations. They remain clearly detached and focused on their intention of bringing support to people in need. And, at the same time they are so aware of the delicate balance between life and death and the fragileness of our humanity. They are so careful with a person who is physically broken, not wanting to contribute to the pain and suffering already being endured.

Transformational coaching now, and in the future, is being shaped by what’s gone before. Coaching, per se, still has a relatively young history. However, already we’re waving goodbye to some of the more dinosaur methods of old. Instead, coaching is becoming an increasingly professional endeavour, as it really should. We’re not there yet. There are still lessons to be learned, and changes to be made to transformational coaching itself. Don’t get us wrong: the GRE isn’t that much fun, either. The GRE is a little bit longer than the GMAT, and it contains some pretty annoying vocabulary questions. But the good news is that the GRE doesn’t have any grammar-based questions, and the GRE quant section doesn’t require the same depth of reasoning as the GMAT. And as we discussed in a series of blog posts comparing the GRE and the GMAT, the GRE allows you to change your answers within each section… which means that the psychological and strategic challenges aren’t as fierce on the GRE as on the GMAT.
